Adventure? Algarve!

Algarve motorbike tourIf you’re looking for a little European adventure this summer, then a specialist fly-ride touring outfit on the Algarve may be just the ticket.

We packed Paul Browne’s bags and sent him off to check out the craic on Portugal’s Atlantic coast.

He didn’t send us a postcard, but he did draft a few words for you on the fun he had in the sun.

This is the time of year when a lot of us look to travelling to Europe on two wheels.

While we might have all the kit and the best of bikes, one of the things that many of us are short on is time.

What we’ve seen emerge over the last number of years are tour companies who offer ‘fly-ride’ solutions to this particular problem.

Keeping it simple

Amongst these I’m particularly partial to the adventure motorcycling outfit ADV Moto Haven in Portugal’s Algarve.

Everything is made simple for the time-pressed amongst us. Indeed the package is designed to be so simple that even I can make it work!

Algarve motorbike tourWhile I have got quite a bit of off-road experience, I still find the genre a little intimidating.

When I journeyed across the continent, I found that my hosts, Tania and Greg, rent fresh and well-maintained CF Moto 450 machines. I was impressed to see that they were also happy to ride with me until I got comfortable.

While they didn’t, and don’t, offer instruction they were very happy to share their experience of riding on the plentiful trails in their ‘neighbourhood’.

Tania was quite clear that everyone has to start somewhere and rather than being thrown in at the deep end they were there to offer support to the novice or nervous rider while leaving more experienced ones to spread their wings!

All sorted

Algarve motorbike tourWhat they’ve done for riders at both extremes – and everything in between – is ensure everything else is sorted.

The idea – and it’s a good one – is that with all your practicals nailed down, you can simply concentrate on enjoying riding the bike.

Algarve motorbike tourAccommodation is simple with two bed cabins, breakfast and dinner included. Two and three-day bookings are the most popular.

There’s also an option to use one of those acoustic motorcycles, the ones with the pedals. Ghastly!

One of the significant things that I really liked was the atmosphere that the guys created.

Lost and found

It’s a quiet, comfortable place to stay and because there is so much space to ride I could go get lost, yet find myself again using the supplied sat nav. That was a really nice touch which was much appreciated as I explored foreign and unfamiliar terrain.

Very best of all I wasn’t thrown in with a group I didn’t know and asked to ride with riders of different skill levels.

If you fancy a little Portuguese adventure, take a look at their website and swap weeks of preparation for a few days of two wheeled heaven!
