Zero hits the dirt

Zero XBZero Motorcycles is getting down and dirty with a couple of off-road bikes set to join the company’s range in the new year.

The new electric machines look just the part for those who like to throw themselves around a dirt track, reports Paul Browne.

Zero, the Californian electric bike company, has added a pair of new machines to their range.

The new XE and the new XB are dedicated to off-road adventures.  This would have to be regarded as one of the best /natural habitats for a two-wheeled EV.

While electric bikes suit urban use, particularly the commute, the technology is also ready-made for dirt riding  where the demands for instant power are obvious and the short time spent on track make for the perfect, range-friendly proving ground.

Making light

Cleverly, the company has made a pair of bikes with lighter batteries that make it both easier to reach optimum speed and to jump, wheelie and generally have off-road fun.

Because the battery is so much smaller and carries less weight, the bikes come with an extra one that can be swapped out with ease.

I first saw this idea made real previously on Yamaha’s Neos where it works a treat.

Charging the battery from empty to full takes 3 hours with a regular domestic power supply.

Zero XB

Torque dirty

Zero XBAn 832mm seat height on the XB is complemented by a top speed of 75 kph and 275 foot pounds of torque.

At a claimed weight of only 63 kilos it’s incredibly light for an off-road machine, never mind an electric one.

The suspension is fully adjustable and the bike even comes with traction control that can be switched off.

Like the road bikes, the choice of power modes can be extended with a personalised customisable one.

The XE on the other hand puts out 468 foot pounds of torque and weighs in at a heavier 101 kilos, with a top speed of 85 kph.

The seat  is also taller at 900mm, a more familiar height for an off-road machine.

Both the XE and the XB will be available from Franklin Motorcycles  (01 538 5005) in Baldoyle in the new year.
